Billionaire Giveaway Turns into Naming and Shaming
Inevitable really…
Bill Gates and Warren Buffett have created the much publicised “Giving Pledge,” wherein the super rich promise to donate at least half their money to charities. The latest version of the list was recently released as witnessed by coverage yesterday and it includes names like Jim Simons of Renaissance Technologies, John Arnold the natural gas super-trader, Blackstone’s Pete Peterson and former Citigroup chairman Sandy Weill.
But attracting as much interest as those whose names are on it are those whose names are off it. Helpfully the WSJ has compiled a neat who’s in and who’s out by sector – non-entrants includes George Soros with an estimated $11 billion and Stephen Schwarzman, who co-founded Blackstone with Peterson and other famous money men. Calling them tight-arses may bit going a bit far though as some of them (like Soros) are well known philanthropists in their own right.
