City: hung parliament would be disaster

Mixed messages flow from political outputs but the City is in little doubt…

The Conservative party has been saying it, so have some Labour MPs. Other Labour politicians disagree. Then there’s Nick Clegg and the Liberal Democrats who say fear of a hung parliament is a load of nonsense – for obvious reasons.

The City disagrees with the Lib Dems – it is firmly of the view that a hung parliament will be a disaster.

CityAM: An overwhelming majority of panellists (80 per cent) [from the The City A.M./PHI Panel] said a hung parliament was likely to send sterling “somewhat lower” or “much lower”.

An even bigger proportion of panellists (83 per cent) said the cost of government borrowing would rise if the either of the main parties fail to win an outright majority.

Economic growth would also be lower under a coalition or minority government than it would be under a majority government, according to sixty-two per cent of panellists.
