Insider Dealing Conviction for former Cazenove Partner Malcolm Calvert

Just not the sort of behaviour one expects from a former partner of the Queen’s stockbrokers…

Doubtless she would be mightily unimpressed.

Calvert, 65, was given a guilty verdict on five counts of insider dealing but acquitted of a further seven counts by a jury at Southwark Crown Court yesterday.

Telegraph: Mr Calvert used inside information to invest £502,143 in the shares of three companies that were the subject of non-public takeover bids that Cazenove was working on. In total he and a friend, Bertie Hatcher, made a gross profit of £103,588 from buying and selling shares in biotechnology company Vernalis, engineering company Johnston Group and water supplier South Staffordshire.

How awful.

And frightfully embarrasing for his former employer.

A spokesman for Cazenove said: “This case was against an individual who left Cazenove in 2000 and was in connection with matters between 2003 and 2005. There were never any charges brought against Cazenove and no breach of systems and controls was identified. We co-operated fully with the FSA throughout their investigation and will continue to support them in their efforts to ensure that the UK’s financial markets are free from abuse.”
