This assumes that anger will overtake apathy when it comes to voters expressing their view of the world. The last general election in the UK saw less than 65% of voters actually bother to vote with 2001 even worse at just over 60%. And haven’t the Sex Pistols retired?
Dominique Strauss-Kahn told the CBI annual conference of business leaders that another bailout for the financial services sector would not be tolerated by the “man in the street” and could even threaten democracy.
“Most advanced economies will not accept any more [bailouts]…The political reaction will be very strong, putting some democracies at risk,” he told delegates.
“I do believe that the financial sector needs to contribute both to the costs of the financial crisis and to reduce recourse to public funds in the future,” he said.
He didn’t clarify which democracies might be at risk; we suspect he couldn’t mean the UK. The City might see a few bearded men and women wandering through it with some cardboard signs and the Daily Mail would probably have a spike in its comments section but anarchy, in this weather?
